My friend Chris sent me an email this morning:
I need some new songs. Any recommendations? Here are five that I put on my latest mix cd. Can you recommend five of your favorites?Cat Empire – Sly
Damien Rice – 9 Crimes
Pete Yorn – Life on a Chain
Tori Amos – Big Wheel
Polyphonic Spree – light and day
My reply:
Hmmm... 5 current faves... lets see...Travis - Selfish Jean
Phoenix - Too Young
Wilco - ELT
The Doves - Almost Forgot Myself
Editors - All Sparks
So, how about you? What are 5 of your favorite songs right now??
Hi Jon,
only 5?? Not at all easy that... but at a push:
CSS - Pretend We're Dead (excellent L7 cover)
The New Pornographers - The Laws Have Changed (great example of what I like in US/Canadian indie, the sort of thing that you guys do SO well)
We Are Scientists - The Scene Is Dead (great energy to this one)
Belle & Sebastian - Wrapped Up In Books (or Asleep On A Sunbeam... not an easy choice there, but both are wonderfully catchy)
The Long Blondes - Once And Never Again (the non album version that I got from an NME compilation - just had to include something English)
So nothing too new, but nothing too old either. All of it's worth hunting down.

Chris,
Hey there! Yeah, only 5 - it really makes you think, huh? I could probably do a top 50 and it would still be too short a list! Huh?? :-)
I haven't heard the CSS song or the Long Blondes, I'll have to check those out!
I've really been digging the new Travis CD, it is the only thing other than Pete Yorn I've listened to in the last couple of days!

Jon,
I got the CSS track as an MP3 file from Pitchfork. It's buried in their past Forkcast pages. Well worth looking for.
Hope you like it!
